Dehydration: seniors, a population at risk
Encourage them to drink, even without thirst!
The sensation of thirst decreases with aging. What are the signs? Dry mouth, wrinkled skin, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue …
In case of doubt, it is imperative to alert his doctor and drink plenty: 1l at least 1.5 liters per day, and more in some situations (malnutrition, poor appetite, heat , medical treatment…).
Tips for preventing dehydration
- Drink small amounts throughout the day
- Variety/Pleasant change: water (flavored or not), tea, coffee, chicory, dairy drinks, fruit juices, soups, soft drinks… enjoy!
- Convenience: keep a bottle of water and glasses close to their place of seating or bedside
- Adress the fear of incontinence
